GREENWOOD PROJECT
Honoring Black Wall Street
BLACK WALL
STREET
Our new clothing line drops June 1st. On June 1, 1921, planes dropped bombs on the Greenwood District. This collection honors the history, local businesses, and strength of the people who rebuilt.
THE HISTORY OF GREENWOOD
Greenwood was a famous neighborhood in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Famous leader Booker T. Washington called it "Black Wall Street" because it was full of successful Black-owned businesses. It was a place of success, pride, and independence.
A Successful Community
During the oil boom, Greenwood grew quickly. By 1921, more than 10,000 people lived there. The neighborhood had hotels, cafés, clothing stores, movie theaters, and its own banks. Because of segregation laws, Black residents spent their money at Black-owned shops, keeping wealth in the community. Good style was important, and residents took pride in wearing fine custom clothing.
THE HISTORIC CLOTHIERS
Greenwood had its own fashion designers and tailor shops. These businesses designed fine clothes for the community and helped build the local economy.

Wells Garment Factory
Dora Pritchett Wells and her husband John H. Wells owned a popular clothing factory in Greenwood. The factory employed local Black women to make beautiful dresses and suits. They were known for their neat and high-quality work. Dora was also a community leader who helped local families after the 1921 fire.

H.L. Byars Tailor Shop
H.L. Byars Tailor Shop was the best place in Greenwood to get custom suits. Mr. Byars made hand-crafted formal wear for the neighborhood's doctors, lawyers, and business owners. His high-quality work stood as a symbol of pride and success.
Elliott & Hooker
Elliott & Hooker was one of the largest clothing stores on Greenwood Avenue. It was the go-to shop for fine ready-to-wear clothing, suits, and dresses. The store was a clear sign of the wealth and style of the people living in Black Wall Street.
